Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa (subclass 884)
An onshore temporary option for eligible aged parents, allowing up to two years in Australia and a potential later subclass 864 application.
- Status
- Temporary · up to 2 years
- Age
- Australian Age Pension age threshold
- Balance of family
- Required
- Where to apply
- In Australia, not in immigration clearance, at application and decision.
What this visa allows
- Remain in Australia for up to two years after grant.
- Work and study in Australia, without government support.
- Consider a separate permanent subclass 864 application if eligible.
Eligibility at a glance
- Have reached the qualifying Australian Age Pension age. This is an age threshold, not a promise of eligibility for pension payments.
- An eligible settled child who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, and an eligible sponsor, subject to applicable exemptions.
- Meet the Balance of Family Test, unless a specific exemption applies.
- Meet health, character and other applicable visa requirements.
- Be in Australia at application and decision and hold a status that permits a valid application.
Important limitations
- Places are capped and applications are queued. Substantial waits can apply; a contributory visa is not a fast-track or guaranteed outcome.
- Being in Australia does not itself make an application valid. Current visa conditions, including any No Further Stay condition, and immigration history need assessment.
- You cannot apply for this visa if you have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870). Seek advice before choosing the order of applications.
- Subclass 884 is not permanent residence and does not automatically convert to subclass 864. Plan your next application and lawful status before expiry.
Costs and waiting times
A staged payment pathway, not a discount. Combined 884 and 864 charges generally exceed direct 864; queues apply.
Government charges are separate from professional fees; other costs may apply. Check current amounts on the official subclass page rather than relying on a fixed quote here.
Check the Department’s current parent visa queue information. It is not a promised decision date.
Related pathway
The 884 → 864 pathway separates temporary and permanent applications. Compare the total charges and timing with a direct subclass 864 application before deciding.
This is general information, not an individual eligibility assessment. Requirements, charges and processing change. Check the current position on the Department of Home Affairs page for subclass 884 (opens in a new tab).
About the 884
Subclass 884 requires you to be in Australia, not in immigration clearance, when applying and when the Department decides the application.
Do not assume an extension. This visa provides up to two years; a permanent subclass 864 application or another lawful option must be assessed separately.
Home Affairs currently requires new temporary contributory aged parent applications on paper. Follow the official instructions rather than treating ImmiAccount document management as online lodgement.
