Understand the options. Choose with purpose.
A clear guide to Australian schools, English courses, foundation pathways, VET, TAFE and higher education, including AQF qualifications and provider checks.
Australia offers different education sectors, not one fixed route that every student must follow. The right starting point depends on your existing qualifications, English, goals and the entry criteria of the course.
Admission is decided by the provider. The visa is decided by the Department of Home Affairs. Neither is guaranteed.
Different sectors, different purposes
Course length and commencement dates vary. Check the specific provider rather than relying on a universal intake or duration.
Schools
Primary and secondary education is delivered through government and non-government schools. International enrolments, fees, age criteria and under-18 welfare arrangements require specific checks.
English-language courses
ELICOS courses develop English for academic, professional or general purposes. Entry levels, duration and start dates vary. English preparation does not by itself satisfy every admission or visa English requirement.
Foundation and pathway studies
Preparation programs may support entry into a destination course. Meeting the pathway conditions, gaining credit and being admitted to the next course are separate matters; formal arrangements must be checked.
VET and TAFE
Vocational Education and Training focuses on occupational knowledge and practical skills. TAFE institutes and private RTOs offer different qualifications. Check training components, course registration and any separate licensing requirements.
Higher education
Universities and non-university higher-education providers offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Admission may depend on prior qualifications, grades, English and, for research, supervision or a suitable research proposal.
How AQF qualifications fit together
The Australian Qualifications Framework has ten levels. A level describes the complexity of learning, not a guaranteed job, admission, credit transfer or migration outcome. Schools and English courses should not simply be placed on this tertiary qualification ladder.
Levels 1–4 · Certificates I–IV
Certificate qualifications develop knowledge and skills at increasing levels of complexity. Course prerequisites and recognition depend on the qualification and provider.
Levels 5–6 · Diploma to Associate Degree
Level 5 includes Diplomas. Level 6 includes Advanced Diplomas and Associate Degrees. Credit towards another course depends on the receiving provider’s assessment or formal agreement.
Level 7 · Bachelor Degree
Bachelor degrees develop broad and coherent knowledge for professional work or further learning. Duration and professional recognition vary by discipline and course.
Level 8 · Honours and graduate qualifications
Level 8 includes Bachelor Honours Degrees, Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas. These qualification types have different entry and learning requirements.
Levels 9–10 · Masters and Doctoral Degrees
Level 9 includes Masters Degrees and level 10 Doctoral Degrees. Coursework, research, supervision and admission requirements depend on the qualification and institution.

Check prior study, grades, English and any portfolio, work experience or research requirements.
Registration and recognition
Check CRICOS where relevant and any professional accreditation or licensing implications separately.
Delivery and intake
Confirm campus, teaching format, duration, practical components, availability and application deadlines.
Costs and conditions
Read tuition, other charges, payment terms, refund terms and the provider’s written agreement.

Australian Education System: common questions
No. TAFE institutes commonly offer vocational education, while universities offer higher education. Some providers operate across sectors. Compare the specific qualification, course content, accreditation and career relevance rather than the provider label alone.
No. Admission and credit transfer depend on the receiving provider and course, your previous learning and any formal pathway agreement. You must also separately satisfy relevant visa requirements.
No. Academic and English requirements, intake dates and deadlines vary by provider and course. Visa English requirements are a separate assessment and should not be inferred from an institution’s offer.
CRICOS lists registered providers and courses available to students studying in Australia on a student visa. Check the exact course, provider and location. Registration does not guarantee admission, visa approval, employment or permanent residence.
